Remembering Bretagne, the last rescue Dog of 9/11

Sad news across America that on June 6th , Bretagne a golden retriever who was the last remaining dog to rescue people in the 9/11 tragedy, has gone to her rest at the magnificent age of 17 years. These animals stepped into action when the tragedy of 9/11 was still being absorbed by the world. They worked tirelessly to save human lives. In some cases, the animals simply gave the people on ground zero a grounding sense of reality and comfort in a way that no human could.

Many people reported that petting and hugging the dogs who were there gave them comfort when their world appeared to be collapsing. Bretagne, put herself in the thick of things with an unquestioning loyalty to mankind, she remained dedicated only to saving the lives of those involved. The animals were not responsible for the crazy world that men create, yet they live in it. They never question it, and strive only to please us without fault.

How do you say thank you to a soul who has given so much too so many and asked so little? Will she ever truly know what she did there on that day? We will never know what went through her mind, or if somehow she tried to make sense of the chaos. All we will know is that she gave, and for that, there are no words that could express the gratitude of those she and all the Canine friends like her helped. I hope her human Denise Corliss gains some comfort in knowing she loved and cared for a hero. She now runs over the rainbow bridge like a puppy, free from the pains of this world. Thank you Bretagne.
